Edward Porter Essertier, Jr.'s Obituary
Edward Porter Essertier, Jr., of Culpeper passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born September 6, 1921 in Hackensack, NJ to the late Edward and Edna Crandall Essertier.
Mr. Essertier was an active volunteer of several organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8469 in Fairfax, where he served in 2000-01 as commander; the National Press Club, Culpeper American Legion Post 330, the Host Lions Club of Culpeper, where he was treasurer; and the Princeton Club of Washington and Culpeper Presbyterian Church. He was also a volunteer fund-raiser for Princeton University for many years and was the Class of 1942 president for five years during the 1990’s.
Mr. Essertier was well known for his great sense of humor. He was an accomplished musician having played the harmonica, piano and accordion and had wanted to play at his own service. He worked diligently in bringing professional baseball back to Washington. He was loved by everyone, extremely generous, had the memory of an elephant and was a great provider for his family. He never met a stranger he didn’t like and will be remembered as a fine gentleman and a true patriot.
His first wife was the former Muriel “Mimi” Keir of Englewood, NJ, who served during World War II as a Women’s Army Service Pilot (WASP). They married in 1946 and had four sons and a daughter. Muriel died in 1967. His second wife was Margaret “Margo” Engerran of Pasadena, whom he married in 1969. She died in 1993. He was married a third time in 2005 to the former Shirley Faye Barrows of Culpeper, who survives him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons; David C. Essertier of Norwalk, CT, Robert P. Essertier, William A. Essertier and Donald L. Essertier, all of Arcadia, CA; and his daughter, June Welch and her husband, Wayne of Vienna, VA; stepdaughters, Cynthia McClellan of Woodbridge, VA and Christina McColl of Lithia, FL; stepson, Jeffrey S. Barrows of Ashburn, VA; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great grandsons and one step great-grandson.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 15, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 11 am at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lanny Horton officiating. Military honors will be performed by Culpeper V.F.W. Post 2524 and V.F.W. Fairfax Post 8469.
Inurnment will be private.
