She spent her adult life working alongside her husband on their family beef cattle farm in Winston, Virginia. Following her husband’s death eleven years ago, she continued to manage the farm herself and keep it operational until her own passing. Mrs. Curtis also enjoyed her work in the Culpeper County Food Service Department for twenty-six years. She decided to take early retirement in order to care for her ailing husband and three minor grandchildren. Her motto for life was “if you want a friend, you must first be a friend”. She valued her friends dearly. Time spent sitting on her front porch visiting, outings to music festivals, and lunches with friends highlighted her days. It has been said that she never met a stranger. She would often approach someone and kindly state “you look like someone I should know”. More often than not a lengthy conversation would follow.
