Dorothy Marie Simmons' Obituary
Dorothy Marie Simmons, born Friday, May 13, 1960, stepped into the embrace of Jesus on Sunday, August 8, 2021, following a courageous battle against cancer. She was a beloved sister, aunt, and godmother.
Dorothy was gifted with a keen intellect and unlimited curiosity and could always be counted on to share her knowledge about any topic. She graduated from La Reine Catholic High School in Maryland in the Class of 1978, and attended Loyola College. Dorothy worked at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., until she passed into eternal life. She was devoted to her nieces and nephews, and would often use her work leave to help her family and friends. Dorothy was always interested in her family and their activities and friends, and was an active part of their lives. Dorothy was a devout Catholic, and prayed daily and offered her suffering as a gift to the Lord, having a particular devotion to the Infant of Prague. She was a dog fancier, and particularly loved her Welsh Terriers and Afghan Hounds, as well as her Australian Terrier, Hunter.
She will be missed by her brother and sister, Robert Simmons and Anne Simmons McGroarty, brother-in-law Patrick McGroarty, and by her nieces and nephews, Rose (Jason Farry), Robert Emmett, Liam, and Moira McGroarty.
Dorothy was preceded by her parents, Robert Simmons and Joan (Kelly) Simmons.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, where a rosary will be prayed at 3:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at her parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Fredericksburg, at 10:30 am on Monday, August 16, 2021. Interment will follow in Historyland Memorial Park.
