Dorothy Parlatore's Obituary
Mrs. Dorothy Parlatore (“Dossy”), age 93, a resident of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, March 17, 2012.
She was born in Bronx, NY, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Egger. She was predeceased by her husband, William Parlatore, who died in 2006. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC and Alicia and her husband Charles Payne of Spotsylvania, VA; her son William, Jr. and his wife Laurene of Annapolis, MD; and two grandchildren Timothy of Brooklyn, NY and Molly and her husband Michael Justice of Knoxville, TN.
Before moving to Virginia in 2004, she had resided in New Jersey since childhood, most recently in Panther Valley (Allamuchy) and Short Hills.
She is an alumna of Columbia High School (South Orange, NJ) and of Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH).
During World War II, Dossy was an Ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving both in California and in Washington, DC. Her wartime duties included piloting a patrol plane and appearing in military public relations films and advertisements. While in Washington, near the end of the war, she was selected to carry the condolences of the U.S. Coast Guard to Eleanor Roosevelt upon the death of President Roosevelt.
Before marrying, she worked at Bambergers department store and Prudential Insurance Company. When her children had grown and left the nest, she and her sister Alicia started a small retail business named Touchmark. Among her interests were classical music (she was an accomplished singer), gardening, reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, and doing anything with, or for, her grandchildren. Friends and family will remember her as a lady, in the finest sense.
A funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mathews Catholic Church, 8200 Robert E. Lee Drive, Spotsylvania, VA.
Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).
