Dorothy Agnes Buckman's Obituary
Dorothy Agnes Buckman (Dottie) of the Celebrate Virginia Senior Community, Fredericksburg, died June 1, 2013 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Dottie was born on April 23, 1929 in Newark, New Jersey to Genevieve and Robert Williams who both succumbed to tuberculosis. She was later adopted by Mr. & Mrs. Carl Fitchben of Port Chester, New York where Dottie spent her formative years.
She attended White Plains Hospital School of Nursing where she obtained her nursing degree and starting her nursing career. She met Robert Buckman in 1947 prior to his attending the US Naval Academy. They were married after Bob’s graduation in 1952 and she began her role as a “Navy Wife”. Together, Bob and Dottie raised 10 children. The eldest son Michael was deceased in 1988.
She is survived by husband Bob, son Dr. Paul Buckman (Holly) of Halifax, VA; Steven Buckman of Culpeper, VA; son Brian Buckman (Lora) of Ashburn, VA; daughter Cynthia Robinson (Mark) of Ashburn, VA; son Robert. Buckman, Jr. (Mary) of Ashburn, VA; daughter Cathleen of Glen Burnie, MD; daughter Diane of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter Sheila Reilly (Mark) of Sterling, VA; and son John Buckman (Kerry) of Berryville, VA. In addition, she is survived by 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Dottie has always been active in the Catholic Church being a current member of St. Jude Parrish in Fredericksburg, VA. She also enjoyed participating in the activities afforded by her community, in particular the challenging bridge games.
Dottie’s family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 10725 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. Burial will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers Dottie’s family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or St. Jude Roman Catholic Church Building Fund (see www.stjudechurch.us).
