Doris McCauley Smith's Obituary
Doris McCauley Smith, age 74, passed away quietly and peacefully at her home in Spotsylvania, VA, surrounded by her loving family the morning of November 5, 2017.
She was born on August 26, 1943, in Old Fort, NC to Theron F. McCauley and Helen Dalton McCauley.
Doris married Michael A. Smith on February 8, 1964, in Williamsburg VA, while attending Christopher Newport College. She later went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from the College of William and Mary. She spent many years as a primary school teacher in Newport News and finally as a reading resource teacher for Spotsylvania County where he retired.
Doris loved spending time with her family and especially her nine grandchildren and her two best friends, Carol Parisi and Karen Crotta. She was passionate about her faith and enjoyed quilting, reading, Bible study and playing the piano.
Doris was caring, kind and always compassionate. Her gentle spirit and loving smile will be remembered by those whose lives she impacted.
She is survived by her sister, Linda McCauley Lanning of Warsaw Indiana; her beloved husband, Michael; daughter, Shellie; son, Ted (Peggy); nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at Calvary Chapel, 3625 Latimers Knoll Ct, Fredericksburg.
An additional memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Pope Chapel, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, followed by a reception at the Alumni House.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
