Donna Jean Smith's Obituary
Donna Jean Smith, 79, of Culpeper, VA, passed away Monday, April 20, 2026, at Poet’s Walk in Warrenton, VA. She was born on September 19, 1946, in Sutton, NE.
Donna was a vibrant and joyful spirit who truly lived life out loud. She had a deep love for music and could often be found singing or enjoying karaoke, rarely missing an opportunity to share her voice and bring a smile to those around her. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious, and her presence could light up any room.
A proud graduate of the University of Maryland, Donna earned her bachelor’s degree and carried her curiosity and love of learning throughout her life. She shared 25 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, Hank, and together they built a life full of adventure. The two loved to travel, especially with the Culpeper Corvette Club, creating lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences along the way.
Donna had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly her beloved dogs. She enjoyed attending dog shows and took great pride in her champion foxhound, Angel. Her compassion extended beyond her own pets through her volunteer work at the Culpeper Animal Shelter, where she gave her time and care to animals in need—and where she found and adopted her cherished dog, Ella.
Above all, Donna will be remembered for her kindness, her passion for life, and the love she gave so freely to her family, friends, and animals. Her voice, her laughter, and her warm spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Mulford Henry “Hank” Smith, III; her sister, Sharon Samek; her children, Laura Achterhof, Michael Achterhof, David Achterhof (Jessie), Jennifer Conk and William Smith; her grandchildren, James, Isabelle “Izzy” and Anthony; her foxhounds, Angel and Sophia; and a host of extended family and friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne Irmer and Ardith Luth; her dogs, Areatha, Kelly and Ella.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 11 a.m. at New Salem Baptist Church, 8233 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA. with Pastor Mike Dodson officiating.
