Donald Evan Crow's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Evan Crow, who departed this life peacefully on September 23, 2025, at the age of 86, at his home. He was known mostly as Evan and by some as “Mr. Friday,” due to his assertion that every day was “not bad for a Friday.”
Born in 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama, Evan lived a life marked by his quirky sense of humor, deep
integrity, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
Evan was a graduate of Auburn University and was a proud War Eagle. His time at Auburn was bisected by a stint in the U.S. Navy, where his specialty was photography–a skill that served him well professionally. He continued serving our country in the reserves.
After a short time studying to be an Episcopal priest at the Virginia Theological Seminary, he took a job restoring old films for the Library of Congress. This was followed by jobs at Germanna Community College, Bionetics Corporation, and ending with the Warrenton Training Center.
Outside of work, he was an avid enthusiast of ham radio, photography, and model trains, hobbies that reflected both his technical curiosity and his appreciation for detail. He could often be found in his workshop, planning or repairing his backyard train oval or communicating with fellow radio operators from across the globe — a pastime that brought him joy and lifelong friendships. Locally, he was a longtime member of the Culpeper Amateur Radio Association.
He was a longtime and faithful member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, where he served with quiet humility and deep faith in many roles. His presence in the congregation will be deeply missed. He was also a member of the International Order of Saint Luke Christian healing ministry.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Tom Crow (Maria), daughter Cathy Caldwell (Ben), daughter Rebecca Gallagher (Billy), and seven grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride into his life. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul; mother, Sara; brother, Paul; and sister, Rochelle.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 E. Chandler St., Culpeper, VA 22701.
A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 115 N. East Street, Culpeper, VA 22701.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Culpeper Food Closet (P.O. Box 343 Culpeper, VA 22701), a ministry of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, in Evan’s memory — supporting a cause close to his heart and a ministry where he devoted much of his time.
Though he has left this world, Evan’s legacy of humor, curiosity, and love lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. And, every day is Friday.
