David Vernon Thurston's Obituary
David Vernon Thurston, 83, of Culpeper, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, December 29, 2012 after a brief illness.
David was born on February 22, 1929 to the late William Thomas Thurston and the late Mary Lou Gilbert at what is known as the Bowie House on East Street in Culpeper.
A veteran of the United States Army, David served in I Corp as an artillery observer during the Korean Conflict.
David retired from the Federal Reserve Bank and had previously worked in management at Leggett’s (now Belk). He was also a renowned Civil War historian and an accomplished relic hunter.
David was a wonderful husband, Father, Grandfather and friend. He will be remembered and missed for his easy, quiet demeanor and his incredible sense of humor.
David is survived by Doris “Dorie” Herndon Thurston, his loving wife of 62 years.
David is also survived by his daughter Lou Ellen Thurston Miller and her husband Michael of Culpeper, and his grandson Fielding Thurston Miller of Aspen, Colorado.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels of Culpeper with the Rev. Ted Fuson officiating.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
The Interment will be private at a later time.
