Don Norman
I was a graduate student when Matt came to UCLA. I still recall the first time I heard him speak because his soft Southern accent was something we did not hear very often in Los Angeles. I became a research assistant for Matt one summer and it was during that time that he asked if I would like to coauthor a paper on government spending with him. It was an offer I couldn't refuse and I the paper we wrote became my first publication. I remain thankful to this day for the opportunity and guidance he provided. Matt was a real gentleman and someone all the grad students liked and respected.
