Constance "Connie" Hope Hundemer's Obituary
Constance “Connie” Hope Hundemer, 71, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, peacefully passed away on April 5, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Connie was born on July 28, 1952, to Theodore and Dixie Smith of Alexandria, Virginia. Born into a family of craftsmen, artists, and do-it-yourselfers, she inherited that similar spirit at an early age, learning the foundational skills that would serve her during a successful federal career, and ones she would eventually pass on to her children. Her love for adventure and the outdoors was cultivated through cross-country family camping trips.
After graduating from Thomas Edison High School in 1970, she took a few courses at George Mason Community College and began her early career in retail, with Sears Roebuck. She transitioned to a career with the federal government, starting in the Government Printing Office before working her way over to the Department of Energy to be one of the administrative assistants to the Secretary of Energy. She eventually pursued a promotion to administrative records officer for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, where she finished out her career with over 35 years of service.
In 1977, Connie met Bob at a little bowling alley off Edsall Road, in Alexandria, VA, where he made her their first cup of coffee together. They quickly fell in love, sharing many wonderful hours of conversation and company, and slashing pins on their Friday night bowling league. Connie and Bob went on to have two children, Rebecca (Becky) and Robert (Bobby).
In 2010, Connie retired from the federal government and in 2013 she committed to the retired life spent with her husband in their new home built in Spotsylvania, VA. Finally getting the front porch she always wanted, she spent her final years surrounded by nature; taking pictures of their local wildlife visitors, reading on the porch, and traveling with her best friend Gloria.
Connie is survived by her sister, Sandra; her husband, Bob; and her children, Becky, and Bobby.
She was preceded in death by her father, Theodore, and her mother, Dixie.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg.
Flowers can be sent to the Hundemer house, at 6129 Sunlight Mountain Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22553. If you prefer to make a donation in Connie’s honor, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the following local support organizations: Mental Health America of Fredericksburg, https://www.mhafred.org/ - addresses the behavioral health and substance use needs of our diverse communities across the Fredericksburg region by identifying gaps in local services and creating unique programs and partnerships to address them.; or to Black Dog Hunting, https://blackdoghunting.org/ - connects and heals Military Veterans through the sport of waterfowl hunting while providing an environment of peer-based mentoring and counseling. We do this across the country with a focus on mental health, providing once in a lifetime peer-based experiences in the outdoors.
