Connie Gay Champ's Obituary
Connie Gay Powell Champ, 71, of Spotsylvania County, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2020 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Connie was born in Woodford in 1949 to Floyd and Flossie Powell. She was the oldest of seven girls and was like a second mother to her younger sisters. Connie graduated from Stafford High School and soon after she married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Roberson, Sr., and together they had two children, Annette and Dennis, Jr. After her husband’s untimely death, she remarried Charles F. Gibson and they had two more children, Della and Jason. She was a great mother who took pride in how she could teach her children to be self-sufficient. Connie enjoyed many years of staying home and raising her children - teaching them how to sew, how to cook, to make crafts and so much more.
In 1984, Connie decided to go back to work for the federal government. One of her main tasks was to help develop standards of procedures for government jobs. She was a hard worker and took pride in her job. She retired from the federal government in 2010. Connie later met and married Richard W. Champ. They enjoyed a year of marital bliss together until he passed away in 2013.
Connie loved retirement so she could spend time on her hobbies. She was an avid reader of murder-mystery novels, and loved to watch the I.D. Channel. Connie enjoyed exploring her family’s genealogy and tending to her indoor plants. She was very creative in many different ways, including poetry, ceramics, and sewing wedding dresses and Halloween costumes. Connie also loved to eat. One of her favorite places was Golden Corral because they had catfish on the buffet. Connie was incredibly thoughtful - if you were lucky enough to know her and be loved by her, she always had something up her sleeve to make you happy. It could be buying or making you something you mentioned you wanted or just something she thought would make you smile. Connie was an integral part of teaching and guiding many throughout her life. Her sisters, children, and grandchildren all benefited from her guidance and love through the years. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her four children, Annette Jett, Dennis Roberson, Jr., Della Gibson and Jason Gibson; six sisters, Brenda Brent, Jackie Gordon, Hulda Elswick, Ruby Cooper, Imogene “Deanie” Wood, and Amy Ennis; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other loving extended family.
In addition to her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Roberson, Sr., a brother, Alvin Brooks, a grandson, Chance Jett, and her last love, Richard Champ.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
