Charlie R. Coates,Sr.'s Obituary
Charlie Robin Coates, Sr., 82, died Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville with his family at his side. He was born December 18, 1928 in Madison County to the late William Edgar Coates and Lucy Covington Coates.
He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and attended Slate Mills Baptist Church. Charlie retired as a Civil Servant from Vint Hill Farms Station and the Air Force Reserves after over twenty years service. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. Charlie enjoyed building things and working with his hands. He was a hard worker and quick-witted. He loved his God, his family and his country.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Coates, a son, Charlie R. Coates, Jr. and his wife, Judy, and a daughter, Cynthia C. Jones and her husband, Virgil, all of Culpeper. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Charlie R. Coates, III and his wife, Elizabeth, of Sharon, Massachusetts, Tommy Settle and his wife, Stephanie, of Warrenton, Bobby Jo Settle and her fiancée, Jonathan Jarvis, of Culpeper, Chelsey Jones of Bloomington, Indiana and Courtney and Carley Jones, both of Culpeper. Other survivors include three great-grandchildren, Ellie Ruby, Louisa Jane and Gavin Thomas.
Charlie is also survived by five brothers, Clayton, Hugh, Delma, Paul and John Coates, a sister, Frances Thornhill, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, James, Joe and Robert Coates, and two sisters, Virginia “Sis” Curtis and Mildred Matthews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. Sandy Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.
