Charles J. Schug's Obituary
Charles John Schug, 89, of Gainesville, VA, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Haymarket Medical Center. He was born on March 31, 1936, to the late Peter John Schug and Johanna Katherine Triscoli Schug in Queens, New York.
Charlie worked for IBM as a mechanical engineer for many years. His career allowed him and his family the opportunity to travel the world, living in places such as England, Mexico, Vermont, New York, and Virginia. After his retirement on August 31, 1991, Charlie and his wife, Rita, embarked on a second career of service by joining AmeriCorps and serving the Osceola Council on Aging in Florida for two and one-half years and the Peace Corps for two and one-half years, which took them to the Solomon Islands. He loved to travel and, on the three-month trip home, they drove south in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, rode the railroads of Australia along the southern coastline, up the desert to see Uluru (Ayer’s Rock), and then south to continue the train ride west to visit with his cousin in Perth. From there, it was a wonderful stay in Bali and a visit with his sisters’ family in Oregon. After a short stay in Burke, VA, with their daughter, Diane, a two-year stay in Annandale, Charlie and his wife moved to Heritage Hunt in 2021, where he enjoyed weekly games with the Monday tennis club and bicycle tours within northern Virginia with a biking group.
Charlie loved to drive and drove alone to Alaska, to northern Canada with his daughter, Diane, and solo or with neighbors to other points north, south, and west, a trip to Communist Cuba with the Haftel neighbors. He was an active duplicate bridge player, joining a men’s Thursday morning group in Heritage Hunt and the Monday evening duplicate bridge games, as well as an ACBL sanctioned bi-weekly local group.
Charles is survived by his wife, Rita Foradori Schug; son, James Peter Schug and wife, Lynn Payne Schug; daughter, Diane Therese Schug-O’Neill and husband, Patrick Lynn O’Neill; grandchildren: Jamie Lynn Schug and husband, Frederick (Trey) Bergen, III, Charles Payne Schug, Elizabeth Rose Schug, and Bridget Triscoli O’Neill; sisters: Madeline Bednarek, living in Oregon and Lucille Giambalvo living in Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Katherine Schug, brother, Peter John Schug, Jr. and Charlie’s twin, John Charles Schug.
The family would appreciate any donations to The American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org) be made in his name, as Charlie was a regular participating rider in the annual Tour de Cure bicycle rides.
