Charles Thomas Maat's Obituary
Charles Thomas Maat, of Gainesville, Va., passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 3, 2011.
Born in Passaic, New Jersey, August 2, 1935 to Cornelius and Rita (Quinn) Maat, he graduated from Clifton High School in Clifton, NJ in 1953.
Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, where he served from 1954 to 1957, he enrolled at Temple University. Graduating from Temple in 1961 with a bachelor’s of art degree, he soon began working for the Department of the Army until his retirement in March of 1988. When not working, he enjoyed coaching youth athletics in football, basketball and baseball. In 1991 he published the book “A Maat Family History”, a study in the descendants of Cornelius Maat and Severina Poortvliet Maat on the 100 year anniversary of Cornelius’s immigration to the United States. Other interests included the life and times of Abraham Lincoln and the civil war, Shakespeare and classical music. He was a devoted father and grandfather, renting out every room in his house to put his sons through college; and spent countless hours with his grandchildren, often spoiling them with ice cream and lifesavers.
He is preceded in death by his parents Cornelius and Rita, his brother Thomas Edward Maat and son Aaron Stephen Maat.
He is survived by his brother Cornelius William Maat and wife Virginia of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; his son Bryan Patrick Maat and wife Juanita of Gainesville, Virginia, and their children Heather, Zachery, Caitlin & Carlie; and son Stephen Cornelius Maat and wife Tammie of Clemmons, North Carolina, and their children Jenna and Nicholas.
