Charles William Haun, 94 of Culpeper, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Charles was born in the Strasburg area of Shenandoah County on October 14, 1918 to the late John Austin and Lula Reel Haun.
Charles was a member of the Virginia Army National Guard based out of Winchester from 1937-1940 when he volunteered for enlistment into active duty service in the U. S. Army. He served in Europe to Germany and France with the 116th Infantry, 29th division from September 1942-October 1945. During that time he qualified as an expert marksman and used his skills bravely while in combat. He was very fortunate to have survived seven major battles and spoke highly of the men whom he served with that were killed in action and unable to make it home. He always remembered those men and held them with the highest regards.
After returning home from the war, he had drove a fuel oil truck before moving to Culpeper in early 1950’s to work with the Bingham Taylor Foundry, molding iron for the next 30 years until his retirement. Culpeper became his home and residing with his family just off of North Merrimac road, he was near to Mountain Run Lake, his favorite lake for fishing, he also enjoyed spending time gardening or just reading, enjoying the outdoors and just spending time with his family.
Charles is survived by his four sons and their wives; Charles Lee and Loretta Haun, Larry and Judy Haun, Roy and Dawn Haun and Roger Haun. Also surviving are his three grandsons, five granddaughters and ten great-grand children and two brothers in laws, Jesse and Bill Woodward.
In addition to his parents Charles is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52years, Laura Anna Haun and all of his brothers and sisters, Henry, Philbert, Harry, Madge, and Mary, paternal Hampson Ridenour and Amanda Sheetz Haun all of whom lived in the Shenandoah Valley area, Winchester or Front Royal.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, March 11, 2013 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels of Culpeper, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper with Pastor Nancy Palmer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at the Culpeper National Cemetery.
