Cecil Douglas Pickerel's Obituary
Cecil Douglas Pickerel, 77, devoted husband, father, brother and loyal friend to many, passed away at his home early Saturday morning, July 29, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy D. Dottie Pickerel; his son Kirk Pickerel of Arlington and his daughter, Elizabeth; another son, Keith Pickerel of Alexandria; a daughter Kim Hicks and her husband, Steve and their three children, Andrew, Ann Elyse and Adam; and his youngest daughter, Kelly Pickerel of Richmond.
He is also survived by his brother, Billy G. Pickerel of Rocky Mount, VA and two sisters, Patricia Powell of Candler, NC and Gladys Henson of Low Gap, NC.
Mr. Pickerel was preceded in death by his parents, H. Raymond and Ellen Snow Pickerel; his brother James Pickerel; and his first wife, Nora Mills Pickerel, all of Danville, VA.
Most of his professional life was spent with the Commonwealth of Virginia State Police, where he served thirty years in various capacities, including serving as a trooper in Martinsville, a field sergeant in Galax, a headquarters sergeant in Culpeper and as an undercover investigator for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Northern Virginia. Cecil was a member of the Culpeper Baptist Church, the Culpeper Dawns Lions Club where he served as the organizations first president in 1977-1978, the Virginia State Police Association and Freemasons Fairfax Lodge #43 in Culpeper. He also served his country in the United States Navy for over three years, from 1946-1950. He spent his retirement years as both a background investigator of job applicants for the Virginia State Police and a real estate agent for the Holden Group in Culpeper. He mostly enjoyed the time he spent with family and friends sharing a joke or spending time on the golf course. His unfailing sense of humor will always be remembered.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 31, 2006 from 6-9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA 22701.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Culpeper Dawn Lions Club Sight and Hearing Correction Fund 501 Sunset Lane Culpeper, VA 22701, or a charity of choice.
