Beverly M. Dennis' Obituary
Beverly M. Dennis, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully transitioned on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by her devoted husband and loving family at her home in Culpeper, Virginia.
On January 19, 1946, Beverly Maria Harrod was born to the late Anita Kennison Harrod and George Robert Harrod (both deceased). She was the eldest of three daughters, Cheryl Harrod Brown and Joyce Denise Harrod (deceased). Beverly was a native Washingtonian and first-year baby boomer who was born at Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, DC.
Beverly was educated in the District of Columbia Public School system. Her early childhood education began at age four in kindergarten at Cleveland and Park View Elementary Schools. In 1954, after the integration of the school system, Beverly was transferred to Barnard Elementary School in fourth grade. Upon completion of elementary school, Beverly attended MacFarland Junior High School and Roosevelt Senior School for her high school education, graduating as a Rough Rider in the Class of 1963. After high school, Beverly attended Howard University for one semester but decided that she wanted to continue her professional employment career with the United States Postal Service. Beverly had worked part-time at the Post Office as she attended Howard.
As a career postal employee, Beverly was trained to be a mail sorter, a window clerk, and a station supervisor. She was able to retire in 2001 after 38 years of service as a Financial Manager at her last post office, Benjamin Franklin Station. Beverly would often discuss with her family and friends that she had physically worked in all the postal stations throughout Washington, DC.
Beverly was married to the late Bryson Latimer, Jr., and gave birth to their only child, Bryson Robert (Bobby) Latimer. This marriage ended in divorce. Years later, Beverly met her husband Stephen at the Palisades Post Office. Their admiration and love for each other developed into a marriage that would have lasted for 30 years in May 2025.
Friends and friendships meant so much to Beverly. She prided herself on those friendships that date back to childhood, friends with Barbara Burger, Alberta, and David Merriweather, and many other “brothers” from the “Boys On the Hill” social group. She also cherished friendships she developed later in life, like Walter (Whip) Wilson, and many other relationships in Culpeper. Beverly was an avid reader, she loved to cook, share stories, and watch her favorite TV shows like her daily soap operas. Her spiritual life included being a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and Metropolitan AME Church in Northwest, Washington, DC. Her contagious laugh and warm-hearted spirit brought light into every room, and her wisdom and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Beverly loved being a mother and a grandmother. She always wanted the best for her son Bobby and grandson DeShawn and often did everything in her power to do so. One of her proudest moments was seeing Deshawn graduate from James Madison University last year. She leaves behind a family that will forever cherish her memory, including her devoted husband, Stephen Dennis, her loving son Bobby (Alicia), and her grandchildren Deshawn and Keara. She also leaves to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted sister Cheryl Harrod Brown (Lewis), her loving and devoted niece Danielle Wharton (Simeon), stepdaughters Melissa Dennis and Ebony Young, and one half-sister, Adrienne Gilette. Beverly will be remembered by a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will miss her immensely.
Beverly Dennis was a woman of quiet strength and boundless love. Though she has left this world, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched.
