Betty Jean Slingerland's Obituary
Betty Jean Slingerland, 82, passed away on Friday February 10, 2023. She was surrounded by friends and family.
Betty was born on January 2, 1941 to Laura Florence Pearson and Douglas Robert Evans of Alexandria. She was married to Richard Lee Slingerland, Sr. and they shared 44 years together.
Surviving are her sons, Richard Lee Slingerland, Jr, Michael Wayne Slingerland, Stephen Douglas Slingerland, Andrew Robert Slingerland, and Travis Jason Slingerland; her daughters, Caren Jean Bailey and Laura Teresa Brooks; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; and four siblings, Stuart Robert Evans, Anna Laura Evans Frere, Winfred Amos Evans, and Douglas Eugene Evans “Tinker”.
Anyone who knew Betty understood that she led a life of service and opened her home to everyone. She never complained, and always offered a listening ear and comfort to those around her.
After retiring in 2003, she was able to enjoy some of the activities that she loved the most including reading and decorating, if you came for a visit, you could always count on a furniture rearrangement or wall hanging adjustment. She favored British television, fresh flowers, homemade spaghetti and most of all, family. Even though she raised seven children of her own, Betty spent most of her remaining years raising her two great granddaughters, Anyia and Jailee. When she was no longer able to live on her own, Kayden, Anyia, and Jailee became the lights of her life and the place that she ultimately wished to call home. Also known as Gma and Mrs. Marples, she never asked for anything, yet she gave everything. Her life was selfless and simple, but full when the Lord called her home to be with him.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road Triangle, Virginia 22172.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, cancer.org
