Betty Jean Powell's Obituary
Betty Jean Powell, lovingly known as “Momma Betty” to all and “Gaga,” to close family and friends, resided in Fredericksburg, Virginia, until she entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 3:27 a.m. She was 81 years old.
Born to a large and loving family, Betty was one of nine siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents and several of her brothers and sisters — Lillie Tanner, Marzene Crawford, Annie P. Wilson, James A. Crawford, Mitchell L. Crawford, and Lonnie M. Palmer. She is survived by her devoted son Tyrone Powell, beloved granddaughter Andersen Powell, cherished siblings Dorothy A. Lamar and Walter Crawford, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
Betty faithfully through her career with the Department of Defense, worked for over 30 years. Her dedication and integrity shone through every assignment — from her time in Niagara Falls, New York and ultimately the DMV area, where she served at the Pentagon until her retirement in 2009.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Betty’s greatest joy was serving the Lord. She loved teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and ministering through music throughout the DMV area. Her gift for worship opened doors for her to travel and share God’s love through song wherever He led her.
Known affectionately as “Momma Betty,” she touched countless lives with her beautiful smile, sweet spirit, encouraging words and unwavering faith. She carried a deep love for the Word of God and spent her life worshiping Him by becoming a student of His Word in Spirit and in Truth.
In her own words from her final month of life reflects the essence of her faith and confidence about her own healing:
“Either I will Celebrate on this side or I will Celebrate on the other side — but regardless, There will be a Celebration!”
A homegoing celebration will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Strong Tower Ministries in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, love, and worship will continue to inspire all who knew her.
