Gail,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Bernie's death. Bernie was one of the brightest, most sharp-witted, likeable colleagues I worked with in all my years with NAVFACENGCOM. Although we were colleagues for years, I really came to know him working closely together in the Operations Research Division at NAVFAC Headquarters. I cannot describe all the major contributions he made to the work, studies, and publications we produced as a team. We shared so many debates, head-butts, laughs and hugs I lost count. He was a star and leading authority for our Command and DOD in economic analysis and other operations research efforts. We shared some fun times, some intellectually brilliant times, and weathered some tough times while working together. I know through all of it, he held tightly to his love of you, Chris, and the rest of his family as a touchstone. He immortalized it in one of our major publications still used 24 years later by DOD and many federal agencies. As you read many of the sample problems solved by economic analysis, they begin "Mr. and Mrs White plan...." We shared many laughs over that sleight of hand for acknowledgement of the author. Although we lost touch over the years, our exploits together will always be central to my fondest memories.
