Barbara A. Fluharty's Obituary
Barbara Fluharty was born Barbara Anne Smith in Washington, D.C. where she spent the first decade of her life until the family moved to the historic plantation, Hazelwood, in nearby Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Along with her twin, Dorothy Lee, she graduated from Upper Marlboro High School. Barbara attended and graduated from the prestigious Holton Arms Academy for Women. In 1950 she entered into a devoted and life-long marriage to Charles Calvin Fluharty, who preceded her in death June of 2009. They raised and are survived by four children, Calvin Fluharty, Suzanne Fluharty, Amanda Steeves, and Andrew Fluharty; her sisters, Dorothy Smith and Marilyn Dunphy; her grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In her early married life Barbara was an elementary school teacher and later a medical receptionist. As a loving couple, Barbara and Charles were always open to new adventures. They moved from Maryland to Oregon, and on to Washington, before settling in Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay called them back home. Barbara was active in the United Federation of Doll Clubs, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Red Hatters, the local Victorian Ladies Society, and the Confederated Women’s Club, where she served a time as President. She lent her grace and style to all she did, restoring and collecting dolls, and winning over 40 ribbons for her flower arranging skills.
A private family graveside service will be held in the near future at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA.
