John Monahan
As I recall, Tony was born in New York and served in the Navy in the Post World War II period. He then joined Melpar and helped build the company as a Government contractor, that became the largest company in the Washington DC area in the 1950’s and 1960s. He was instrumental in establishing a manufacturing capability (fabrication, assembly, and test) of electronic components for a wide variety of missile, aircraft, and ground electronics systems, and employed hundreds of technicians and engineers. When Melpar was acquired by E-Systems, he was Vice President of Manufacturing Operations overseeing facilities in Falls Church, Fairfax and Ashburn. He was not only a strong technical leader - his business savvy always resulted in high profits.
I have many fond memories working with Tony. He was a very strong, no-nonsense manager and leader, and radiated a gruff demeanor, but had a heart of gold. He constantly looked out for his employees who in turn worshipped him. Yet I always had fun kidding him as he was struggling to complete crossword puzzles during lunch – it seemed so out of character.
After retiring to the country Tony built a large beautiful house In Madison, Virginia where he enjoyed many years of happiness with his wonderful wife, Betty. I visited him a few times there and we always enjoyed a barbecue lunch at the legendary Pig N Steak restaurant.
Tony was one of the most colorful persons I have ever known. I want to express my sincere condolences to his family, and just tell them how much I loved working with him.
