Ann Catherine Gile's Obituary
Ann Catherine Gile, 88, of Springfield, VA, passed away Monday, October 13, 2025, at Greenspring Senior Living in Springfield, VA.
Ann was born in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, on November 7, 1936. She attended local schools in Pennsylvania before moving to the Washington, D.C. area, where she built a distinguished 33-year career serving in various Federal agencies. Her professional journey included positions with the Department of the Army, Senator John F. Kennedy’s office in the Old Senate Office Building, the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA, which later became the Department of Energy), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
During her years with the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation in Washington, D.C., Ann received numerous awards, including two Bronze Medals for her administrative support of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Program (WIPP) in New Mexico. She retired as a Program Analyst for Administration in January 2003.
In 1955, Ann married Lt. Rexford R. Gile, Jr., of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, upon his assignment to the Engineer Strategic Studies Group (ESSG) in Washington, D.C., following his service in the Korean War. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a degree in civil engineering, Rex volunteered for duty in Korea and later worked both with the ESSG and the EPA as a civilian. He passed away in April 1997, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
Ann is survived by her son, Rexford Gile, III (Patti Burden Gile); daughter, Monica Sloan; grandsons, Joshua Gile, Elijah Sloan, and Caleb Sloan; granddaughter, Bridget Gile; and daughter-in-law, Betsey Rea.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ann is preceded in death by her son, Kevin Gile; siblings, Walter Kruckvich, Thomas Kruckvick, George Kruckvick, and Matilda Kruckvick Haley.
Ann was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and will join her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
