Angelina "Angie" Neri Hallberg's Obituary
Angelina “Angie” Neri Hallberg, 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with liver disease.
She was born on December 14, 1948, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Angie was the daughter of the late Paul E. Neri and Hilda L. Neri, and the sister of the late Vincent N. Neri.
Angie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Christopher M. Hallberg; her daughters, Carrie O’Malley (Michael) and Jessica Beringer (Chuck); her son, Mason Hallberg (Tate); and her beloved grandchildren, Rainey O’Malley of Jackson, Wyoming, Ginny Beringer of Richmond, Virginia, and Landon O’Malley, Sally Beringer, and Anna Beringer, all of Fredericksburg. Angie treasured every moment with her grandchildren and took great joy in being their “Nonnie.”
Angie grew up on 721 Caroline Street in an apartment above the Neri Family Grocery. She graduated from James Monroe High School, where she proudly twirled as a Jayem majorette. Angie graduated from Longwood College and married her high school sweetheart. She began her teaching career at Hermitage High School in Richmond. When Angie and Chris returned to Fredericksburg in 1976, she taught English at Stafford High School and later at her alma mater, JMHS.
Teaching was only one of Angie’s callings. She poured her time and talents into countless community organizations, serving in leadership roles and on committees large and small. From the Parnassus Club and the Town & Country Garden Club to the Longwood College Alumni Board, the Zeta Tau Alpha Alumni Association, and the Now & Then Doll Club, Angie built friendships everywhere she went. She also remained a faithful parishioner of the Catholic Church throughout her life.
Angie’s interests were as wide-ranging as her many friendships. She was an avid reader, card player, Mah Jongg enthusiast, and talented jewelry maker. She was a charter member of the Fredericksburg Joy Luck Club and looked forward to weekly games of poker and Mah Jongg, as well as spirited discussions with the Tuesdays at 10 Book Club.
For many years, Angie taught aerobics classes in the studio behind her home, always dressed in perfectly coordinated leotards, legwarmers, socks, and tights. She kept her friends moving with lively routines, upbeat music, and her own enthusiastic, yet sometimes mistaken, lyrics. Whether on land or in the water, her aerobics classes developed a loyal following, and she was known for closing each session with a thoughtful meditation that left her friends feeling both energized and inspired.
Later in life, Angie spent time at Eagle’s Nest on the Potomac River and in Stuart, Florida. She had a lifelong love of hard-shell crabs and made frequent trips to Cobb Island with family and friends. Angie was famous for snatching the biggest crab off the pile and posing proudly for a snapshot before cracking into her favorite meal.
Angie loved to travel, and Italy, especially the Amalfi Coast, was among her most cherished destinations. She delighted in organizing memorable trips to Italy with family and friends, where she immersed herself in the culture, shopping, and delicious cuisine.
Though homebound in her later years, Angie was lovingly cared for by her children and dedicated caregivers. She was blessed with the frequent companionship of family and friends, whose visits and calls brightened her final days.
Angie was known for her infectious laugh and good sense of humor. She will be remembered as a generous, kind, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Angie’s presence enriched the lives of all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
The family will hold a rosary service at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407, followed by visitation from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 9600 Caritas Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.
In keeping with Angie’s wishes, family and friends are encouraged to honor her vibrant spirit by wearing colorful (not black) attire. For those who have one of Angie’s jewelry creations, please wear it as a special tribute to her life and creativity.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Paul E. Neri Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, 725 Jackson Street, Suite 218, Fredericksburg, VA 22404.
