January 19, 1928 - September 14, 2021
Ruby Ellen Dwyer, 93, of Sperryville, passed away peacefully with family by her side on September 14, 2021 in Culpeper Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late David Marshall Dwyer and Nina Bowen Dwyer. Ruby was a native to what is now the Shenandoah National Park. At age 10, her family moved from the park to their home in Old Hollow, just outside the park boundaries, where Ruby lived until the last few years of her life. As a youth, she worked hard on the family farm and played basketball at Sperryville school where she graduated. Ruby spent 26 years of her life as a teacher’s aide in Rappahannock County Elementary School. She was a beloved colleague, broke racial barriers, and had a heart for each student. Many former students remember her kindness and dedication. She saw many changes throughout her years, but embraced each person she met with compassion and love. Her many diverse friends are testimony to her authentic, vibrant and accepting spirit. At home in the hollow, she was affectionately known as the “Mayor of the Old Hollow” for all her interactions with hollow folks and her interest and care for their lives. She had a strong faith and was a lifelong member of Thornton’s Gap Regular Baptist Church. Ruby coordinated the “Old Hollow Reunion” at the church for most of her adult life and enjoyed catching up with friends and extended family who had moved from the area. She also attended the Sperryville Methodist Church in her later years. Ruby was a very proud, resilient and independent woman until the very end. She loved crocheting, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and always had a good book in her lap. Her last few years at Noble Senior Living, she enjoyed sitting on the porch visiting with friends and fellow residents. The Dwyer family wishes to thank the staff and residents at Noble Senior Living for their friendship and dedicated care of our mother. She is survived by her children, Kathy Yoder (Ken), Sam Dwyer (Connie) and Gary Dwyer; a grandson, Dylan Dwyer, and many loving extended family and lifelong friends. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, James Samuel Dwyer, a son, David Michael Dwyer, and her siblings, Anne Dwyer, Rebecca Shade, David Marshall Dwyer, Jr., and Sally Keyser. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial service at the Reynold’s Memorial Baptist Church Community Center at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Ruby will be laid to rest with her parents, son and husband at the Washington Masonic Cemetery in a private service. An online guestbook and tribute wall are available at foundandsons.com. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is serving the family.
