Max Ashby Welch, 73, of Remington, died Monday, October 11, 2021 at The Culpeper. He was born May 24, 1948 in Warrenton to the late William “Buck” and Mary Welch. Max was a lifelong resident of his beloved hometown of Remington, and served as honorary town security after the police went home. He was previously a member of the Remington Volunteer Fire Department. He was affectionately known as the family encyclopedia, due to his gift for remembering dates and many good stories. Max never met a stranger; he loved animals, farming and John Deere tractors. He worked at Sanders Rock Quarry (later renamed Vulcan Rock Quarry) for 33 years. He is survived by four siblings, Barbara Parker (Steve Early), Carl Welch (Sue), Shirley Hunt, and Gale Smith (Robert Cooke); eleven nieces and nephews, Sandra Shipe (Walter), Toni Russo (Jimmy), Gina Ferlazzo (Robbie), Kimberly Carter (Carty), William Welch, Vicky White (Anthony), Valorie Pillsbury (Jim), Vaynece Lewis (Kevin), Phillip Hunt (Roxana), Lisa Butler (Chris) and Susan Berry (Roger); twenty-one great nieces and nephews, Caitlin, Caroline, Jacob, Tanner, Nathan, Madalyn, Alex, Adeline, Amanda, Danica, Devin, Jayden, Mary, Brandon, Hunter, Julianne, Dylan, Ethan, Liam, Conner, and Caylee; three great, great nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Jimmy Ott and Maxwell Bowen. In addition to his parents, Max is preceded in death by his partner of 40 years, Liz Romine and one nephew, Delbert Welch. A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Holly Baptist Church Cemetery, 6172 Sumerduck Rd, Remington, VA 22734. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Max’s name to the Remington Lion’s Club at 11326 James Madison Hwy, Bealeton, VA 22712, or the Remington Volunteer Fire Dept at 200 E Marshall St, Remington, VA 22734.
