John Morris Fisher

On January 20, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones, John Morris Fisher at age 90 passed away peacefully in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born on April 20, 1922 in Fairhaven, Ohio at the home of his parents, the late Marion Hayes Fisher and Bessie Morris Fisher. On February 1, 1947, he married Thelma Lucille Ison, who passed away in 2002. As a distinguished graduate of Miami University of Ohio, he graduated in 1947. Then, he attended Brooklyn Law School and Northwestern University. Nassen College awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1972. During World War II, he was an Army Air Corps pilot, flying 28 combat missions in B24’s for which he was decorated several times. He served as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1947 to 1953. In 1953, he became National Director for Security with Sears, Roebuck and Company. In 1955, he founded the American Security Council and was President and Chief Executive Officer until his retirement in 2002. In addition, he founded the Communications Corporation of America in 1972 and served as Chairman until his death. Among his other positions, he was most proud of serving as President of the Culpeper Hospital Foundation, Special Advisor to the Scott M. Fisher Foundation, and most recently, President of the Residents’ Council at Rosewood of Cypress, where he last lived in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is best known for developing a National Strategy of Peace Through Strength. To help accomplish this, he organized the bi-partisan Coalition for Peace Through Strength. This Coalition grew to include 231 Congressmen, 42 Senators, and 20 Governors from both parties; 169 national organizations; 514 Colleges and Universities; 3,500 member companies; more than 2,500 Admirals and Generals; and more than 350,000 individual members. He also worked closely with all Presidents from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George H. W. Bush on national security matters. In a tribute to John Fisher’s efforts, President Ronald Reagan said, “As an early member of the Coalition for Peace Through Strength, I supported your resolution for a Peace Through Strength strategy, and it was incorporated as part of the 1980 Republican Platform. Quietly and effectively, your Coalition for Peace Through Strength has made a great contribution toward restoring the credibility of America’s defenses. Your work on Capitol Hill and with the public at large has been a principal factor in returning America to the days when she was militarily strong and morally principled.” With his positive attitude, he lived each day at full-throttle, excited to succeed in his next challenge. He generously shared his wisdom and kindness with so many of us. Now, his extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire and encourage us. He is survived by his son, Steven Roger Fisher and his wife Monica Radman Fisher; his daughter, Linda Lucille Fisher Werner and her husband, John Lee Werner; his grandchildren, Brian Michael Fisher, Evan Alexander Fisher, John Reed Werner, and Laura Lucille Sarah Werner; and his brother, Bruce Paul Fisher. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his grandson, Scott Matthew Fisher. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 26 at Found and Sons Funeral Home from 5-7 pm at 850 Sperryville Pike in Culpeper, Virginia. The Funeral Service will be at Found and Sons on Sunday, January 27 at 1 pm. The burial will be at the Culpeper National Cemetery on Monday, January 28 at 10 am.
