James Jackson Smith

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of James Jackson Smith, a loving father, grandfather, and friend to all whose lives he touched. He left us while sleeping peacefully at his home in Fredericksburg, VA, on October 6, 2023. He was in his 76th year. Born on May 31, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, James was the cherished son of the late Katherine and Clifford Smith. Growing up as an only child, he was a beacon of joy and ambition. After graduating from high school in 1965, James displayed his patriotism by enlisting in the United States Air Force in March, 1965. He dedicated 26 years of service as an Aircraft Structural Maintenance Technician, retiring honorably at the rank of E7 Master Sergeant as a Temporary Disabled Retired Veteran. Beyond his military accolades, which include the AF Commendation Medal, AF Achievement Medal, and several others, James was known for his love of fishing, traveling, and coaching soccer. He wasn't just a mentor on the field; he was a constant, supportive presence in Spotsylvania County, affectionately known as Daddy James, Dad, or Pops by those who revered him. James leaves behind his legacy through his sons, James Michael Smith and Clifford Jerome Smith; his former wife, Rosalina Bernardo Brandon; his adopted daughter, Marietta Williamson; and stepdaughter, Analyn Braza. He was a proud grandfather to grandsons Coltan Luwis Jackson Ciccone and Carson Jerome Smith, along with his step grandsons, Julian Stefan Mena and Ettiene Angel Mena. His family, extended relatives, and the network of friends who became like family will miss his enduring presence. A Celebration of Life in honor of James will be held on October 22nd from 6 pm to 8 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, located at 10719 Courthouse Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. The service will be an intimate gathering of family, friends, and neighbors who have been part of his journey. For relatives and friends who cannot be present, the service will be livestreamed to enable virtual participation in commemorating James's remarkable life. In the journey of life, some leave footprints of love, lessons, and laughter. Dad didn't just leave footprints; he paved a path for us all. May we walk it with honor, remembering that every step is a tribute to the love he shared and the life he lived. We take comfort in knowing that his influence will continue to resonate through the community he served and the lives he touched. Rest in peace, James. You have flown your final flight home.
