Harry Montanye

Harry E. Montanye, 79, died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at his home after a long illness. He retired as director of logistics for BASF in Clifton, N.J., where he designed the layout of chemical production facilities and managed the safety of their procedures. Previously, he managed an ink manufacturing plant for International Chemical Corp. in Elizabeth, N.J. In addition, he served as chairman of the Planning Board in Piscataway, N.J. From 1945 to 1946, he served in the Army as a sergeant and was one of the guards stationed at Los Alamos, N.M. He graduated from Drexel University with a degree in chemical engineering and later earned his MBA from Rutgers University, Newark, N.J. He played the trumpet in several jazz bands in his teenage years. He also sang in many churches with the Olney High School choir in Philadelphia and in choirs and operettas at Drexel University. He had a lovely tenor voice and sang in Episcopal Church choirs all his life, including Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg and finally the Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands. In addition, he was an artistic photographer, an amateur ornithologist and a gardener. He enjoyed playing chess and teaching his skills to his grandchildren. He moved with his wife from Belle Mead, N.J., to Spotsylvania County in 1990, where they lived in a house he designed. He was a much loved husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed. Survivors include his wife, Elma Kauffman Montanye; his children, Elizabeth A. Montanye of Spotsylvania, David E. Montanye of Marietta, Ga., and Margaret I. Tilley of Berlin, Md.; his grandchildren, David A. Specht of Spotsylvania, Frances R., Thomas E. and Harris E. Montanye of Marietta and Jennifer E. and Christina E. Tilley of Berlin; and his brother, Ronald A. Montanye of Chalfont, Pa. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands, with the Rev. Elijah White officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Dillsburg Cemetery in Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands, Box 330, Hamilton, Va. 20159.
