Barbara Amey Richardson

Barbara Amey Richardson passed peacefully on the morning of November 19, 2024 with her son David at her side. She has now joined her husband Peter Welles Richardson as they celebrate their reunion after 25 years of separation. She is survived by her two children Amey Peltzer and David Richardson as well as her four grandchildren Kaitlyn and Derek Peltzer and Kyle and Nathan Richardson. Barbara Richardson was born in Baltimore, MD to Elmer and Georgiana Amey in May of 1938. As a young girl, she grew up in the city of Baltimore and later moved to Catonsville, MD. Barbara had a passion for education and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She attended Towson University where she received her degree in education. She later married Peter Richardson on Feb 10, 1962 and settled in Fairfax, Va where she began her marriage and career in elementary education. She later moved to Woodbridge, VA where she took a brief career break to raise her two children, Amey and David. During this period, she also had the opportunity to share her love of music by playing the piano for her church and children’s schools, camping and boating with the family, many holiday gatherings, as well as trips to the beach. When her children were approaching middle school, Barbara went back to her teaching career in Prince William County. She continued her career in elementary education until retiring with Pete and heading off to Ocean City, MD. They enjoyed their time at the beach! That adventure lasted until the grandchildren were on their way. At that point they moved to Colonial Beach, VA to be located halfway between the two families of Amey and David. Barbara also began teaching GED classes to the local community in Westmoreland County, VA as her love for education never ended. After the passing of her husband Peter in April 1999, Barbara came to spend more and more time and eventually live with Amey and her family. This was a blessing to her family and grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Derek, of spending priceless hours with her, both learning and experiencing her gifts of love. Her other two grandchildren, Kyle and Nathan, called her beach grandma, both for her love of the beach and her beach house where they spent many wonderful days. Barbara loved attending the grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. The grandchildren truly loved their grandmother. Barbara also enjoyed traveling and went on many trips with her husband, family, friends and church family. There were so many wonderful places to travel to and experience in this wonderful world. Barbara had a strong Christian upbringing and faith which she passed to her family and most people whose lives she touched. She enjoyed Sunday school, bible studies, as well as conversations about God and the bible. Many of you have had those discussions with Barbara and her unique insights. The growth and love of the bible and God’s word only increased with her age. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 305 Smallwood Drive, Waldorf, MD 2060.
